NewMoon : creation at the Petit Théâtre Mercelis

This friday, march 7, was a night of 'new moon', and I composed the piece on purpose for this occasion.
For the basic material, I used sounds having a symbolic link with the moon, it's shape (disc), its face (scarred as if it had been bombed), it's cycle and the tides swinging to and fro, and some quiet night ambient recordings from Japan. The treatment plays with the pairs appearing/disappearing, or forward/backward, in a new utopic trial to hang up the course of time.
There is also a minimalist intention, inspired by the unquestionnable fact that very few is given to be seen in a new moon night, since even her visible face is just a silent shadow in the middle of a galactic symphony.

My contribution to the collective celebration of BP's 80th birthday was intitled "astronomie sonore". It is not only an allusion to one of the pieces of De Natura Sonorum: "Géologie sonore", but I also picked from it one very low-sounding pedal...

Printemps des Poètes, édition 2007

A La Bellone, en public et en direct sur La Première (RTBF) de 20h à 22h, improvisations en compagnie de David Nuñez au violon, et Jean-Paul Dessy au violoncelle, pour cette soirée-rencontre autour de la poésie belge, animée par Pascale Tison et David Lallemand.

Together with the violinist David Nuñez and the cellist Jean-Paul Dessy, we performed real-time-processed instruments, electronics and tape. From 20 to 22 p.m. at La Bellone, Maison de la Poésie et du Théâtre, Brussels, and live On-Air (La Première, RTBF).

'Steam and ström' for (Radio)-Art Birthday Party

Sur les ondes de Musiq3 (RTBF, Belgique), à 22h15, Cécile Broché, au violon électrique, improvise un dialogue musical et sonore avec les sons de Stockholm, recomposés sous l'angle d'un hommage aux Ondes Radio, qui fêtent cette année leur 100e anniversaire. (La lampe émettrice est inventée par Lee DeForest, et brevetée en 1907)
Cette performance fait partie d'une grande soirée pan-européenne au cours de laquelle 19 radios se mettent en réseau pour fêter le 1.000.044 e anniversaire de l'Art.
(Concept que l'on doit à l'artiste post-dadaïste Robert Filliou, qui décréta, le 17 janvier 1963: "l'art est né il y a un million d'années, lorsqu'un quidam laissa tomber une éponge dans un seau d'eau.")

As a contribution to the EBU Art's Birthday Party - 3rd edition - we propose an electro-violin live performance in the studio of Musiq3, in Brussels, by Cécile Broché (electric violin) and David Fortez (electroacoustic) : we will play live the world premiere of their common work entitled 'Steam & Ström'. The aim is to create a musical soundscape of Stockholm, with a special focus on 'waves': Waves from the harbor or radio-waves from a small transistor scotched to the ear of a harmonica player in the street. 'Steam' is linked to the numerous steamers navigating in the harbor. The tune heard briefly in the introduction is picked from Miles Davis' interpretation of 'Dear Old Stockholm'.

50 ans de la Médiathèque

La Médiathèque de la Communauté Française a juste 50 ans. Au menu de cet anniversaire, une commande de sept pièces courtes, créées par l'Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles sous la direction de Jean-Paul Dessy, dans une grande soirée de gala au Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles.
"L'onde évaporée", pièce mixte pour ensemble et électro-acoustique, est l'une des sept.

Happy Birthday, Francis Dhomont

Dans la XIIIe édition du Festival "L'espace du Son", une soirée particulièrement festive ce 21 octobre pour fêter les 80 ans de Francis Dhomont.
A l'initiative de Annette Vande Gorne, 21 compositeurs ont créé une pièce courte à l'attention de Francis. L'ensemble constituant une "guirlande", projetée sur les 52 enceintes du Marni.

La Nuit 'acousmatique' de la Nuit Bleue 2006

La Nuit Bleue se décline cette année en deux nuits spéciales: 'acousmatique' et 'électronique'.
La première se demultiplie sous 3 latitudes:
- à Arc-Et-Senans le 7 juillet
- à Mexico en septembre 2006
- à Santiago du Chili en novembre 2006.

Le Printemps des Poètes à 'La Bellone'

Together with the cellist Jean-Paul Dessy, we performed real-time-processed cello, electronics and tape. From 20 to 22 p.m. at La Bellone, Maison de la Poésie et du Théâtre, Brussels, and live On-Air (La Première, RTBF).

Le Printemps des Poètes : une soirée-rencontre autour de la poésie belge, en direct de la Cour de La Bellone et retransmise sur La Première de 20 à 22 heures.

La poésie - cette obscure clarté qui tombe des étoile - et la musique ont toujours fait beau voyage… C’est à une soirée de ce type que Pascale Tison et David Lallemand vous convient. Les poètes tels Jean-Pierre Verheggen, Werner Lambersy, Guy Goffette, Laurence Vielle, Yves Namur, Jacques Sojcher, Vera Feyder, Serge Delaive, Karel Logist et Jacques Izoard redonnent le rythme initial à leur texte qu’ils nous font entendre dans le grain de leur voix. Jean-Paul Dessy et David Fortez, respectivement au violoncelle et au traitement électronique, donnent à ces voix de la dissidence et de l’intime leur plein envol.

2006 is the 2d edition of the paneuropean radio Art's Birthday Party, on jan. 17th.
The belgian public radio program 'La Première' offered a 30 minutes creation, made of a live mix of real-time processed cello (Jean-Paul Dessy), prerecorded musical and ambient sounds, and multilingual readings of the beginning of Pascale Tison's novel Le dernier endroit où il neige.

'Trans-border Run' is the title of this first common electro-musical experience with Jean-Paul, for which we had our playing linked to a random canvas, as a tribute to Robert Filliou, and particularily his work named 'Musique télépathique n°5' (1979), which may be seen untill february in the "Big Bang" exhibition at Centre Pompidou.
(Robert Filliou invented the Art's Birthday concept on jan. 17th, 1963)

Live performance at XL's Mercelis theatre

In opening of the 3-day festival "3 visages de la musique électroacoustique", I performed 'Suite normande', for which i developped, in Max/MSP, MIDI-less interfaces to perform live DSP and interaction, together with live acoustic improvisation while playing prerecorded 'tape'. The experimental setup included close-miked tibetan bowls, hung clock-springs, silver service spoons and fork sampled through a stethoscope, an A4+ wacom graphic tablet for simultaneous 5-parameters control by the right hand, and a 6-sensors set (infrared distance, pedals, ...) enabling simultaneous feet and left-hand actions, linked to the laptop through Sukandar Kartardinata's "gluion" , at Ethernet speed.

Diffusion sur ARTE de "Tableaux dans un grenier"

Film de André Dartevelle sur le sort injuste que connaît l'œuvre du peintre liègeois Roger Lacroix. J'en ai composé la musique sous forme de 14 séquences intitulées "Filigranes" (mixé en Dolby-stereo par Jacques Clisse). Le film, coproduction Dérives - RTBF, avait préalablement été (multi-)diffusé sur "La Deux" début mai 2004. "Filigranes" existe aussi dans un réarrangement plus court en stereo, pour l'écoute seule.

Sensor workshop at Podewil (Berlin)

Attended the 5-day workshop organized by Sukandar Kartadinata (the one in yellow on the right), an artist-in-residence at Podewil (Berlin). Learned much about sensors and how to connect them to Sukandar's "gluion", an Ethernet-based board that transmits 20 X 12-bit-resolution sensor's values every 7 msec. (waow!)
So I became the happy owner of the gluion's serial # 0001, and bought a set of sensors (pressure, infrared distance, simple expression pedal,...) for use as user interface into Max/MSP.

Alizés selected for IREM

'Alizés' has been selected by the Belgian Federation of Electroacoustic Music as one of the four pieces presented by the belgian radio at the International Rostrum of Electroacoustic Music, held on the RAI premices in Rome. The piece gained subsequent broadcastings by several radios in Spain, Serbia,...

Masterclass at the DIEM

Wayne Siegel invited Natasha Barrett and Robert Normandeau to give a masterclass of acousmatic music in Aarhus. Selected as an active participant, I had the opportunity to play my piece 'Alizés' in concert on the 16-way 'regular' acousmonium. Among other participants, Felipe Otondo (Chili) played his piece 'Found Objects'
